My
Spiritual Journey
When
I was first asked to write
my autobiography, I was
apprehensive.
Yet, as I sat down to
write, it became easier
because as I began
discussing my journey of
faith, I knew that I wanted
everyone to realize the
importance of placing their
trust in God.
I was
born on September 2, 1963,
to Shelby and Peggy
(Simmons) Duncan. I am the
younger of two children. I
grew up in Luverne, Alabama.
From
the beginning, church was an
important part of my life.
As a
child, I went to Free Will
Baptist Church. I was called
the “Little Preacher
Boy” because at the end of
each service, I would take
my Bible and walk to the
front and stand by the
pastor. Our family attended
church there until I was ten
years old. Then my family
and I moved our membership
to Rutledge Second Baptist.
This is where my
relationship with God began
to grow.
While
attending Rutledge Second, I
turned my life over to God.
He began to work with me and
mold me as I attended Sunday
school and other church
activities. Clearly, Jesus
was important to me as a
young child and as an
adolescent. My family and I
continued to attend Rutledge
Second until I was
seventeen.
In the
fall of 1981, I was invited
to a graduation supper at
New Harmony Baptist Church
by a very dear friend. After
attending the graduation
supper, I was invited to
attend church the following
Sunday. After visiting and
worshipping at New Harmony
several Sundays, I felt God
was leading me to move my
membership. During January
of 1982, I became a member
of New Harmony Baptist
Church.
By the
end of my teen’s years, I
saw Jesus as the divinely
begotten son of God who died
for the sins of the world,
whose message was about
himself, his saving purpose,
and the importance of
believing in him.
In the
spring of 1989, a friend and
I began Royal Ambassadors
(RA’s) and Girls in Action
Programs (GA’s) where I
began to work very closely
with the youth of New
Harmony. We began very
small, but God soon began to
bless our youth programs
with more and more youth. I
continued to work with the
RA program until 2000. From
2001-2004, I helped start a
Bible study group for young
adults. Also, during 2004,
God called me to become a
lay speaker. This experience
was the most momentous
experience in my Christian
life.
After I
was called, to be a lay
speaker, various churches in
the area began to call and
invite me to speak. In the
fall of 2005, I was asked by
Patsburg Baptist Church to
come and speak. After
several Sundays, I was asked
to become the interim
pastor.
God has
really blessed my life by
allowing me the opportunity
to go out into the community
and spread His message.
Since I have become more
involved in the life of the
church, and in my own
Christian journey, the
greatest thing the Lord has
taught has me is what is
important in life. It is
investing my life in people
and realizing that the
things God has to offer are
eternal. The things the
world has to offer are
temporary.
I
am reminded of Philippians
4:13.
“I can do all things through Christ which
strengtheneth me.”
